Environment and social responsibility

Environmental ethos

Our commitment to sustainability and the environment

At Seaforth Childcare, we believe in fostering children’s understanding and respect of their natural environment. Similarly, we try to help the children adopt behaviours and attitudes that contribute to a sustainable future. Whether you’re a toddler or at preschool age, we believe you’re never too young to start learning.

Some of the sustainability strategies and practices at our Centre include:

Reducing, reusing and recycling

Reducing waste in the Centre and preschool is part of our everyday routine. For instance, we use paper, cardboard and other recycled materials (such as boxes and yoghurt pots) in the craft areas. Our families are also encouraged to donate reusable materials for art and craft work. And the Kids Gourmet Food service we use is also committed to recycling and sustainable practices.

Saving water and energy

Reducing our water usage and increasing the children’s understanding of water-saving practices is also key, with mechanical taps and full and half-flush toilets in use. Similarly, we save water from the outdoor tap to water the vegetable garden, and we save energy by switching off lights when leaving the room. We also turn off power sockets not in use and put visual signs up (made by the children!) to remind us all.

Caring for our environment

In our outdoor area, we try to instil a strong appreciation and care for our garden and natural environment. For instance, we encourage the children to plant, grow and collect fruit and vegetables from our Kitchen Garden. We also go on excursions to the veggie garden at our local Primary School, Seaforth Public, and bring scraps for their worm farm to help make nutritious plant food.

Teaching sustainability within our programs

Seaforth Childcare’s educators continually improve their knowledge in regards to promoting sustainability. In addition, we work hard to help the children develop respect for their natural environment. As part of our teaching practices, we sing songs and tell stories to encourage the children’s sustainability knowledge. We also purchase natural materials and resources for the children to work with. Of course, the learning about sustainability continues in our preschool and School Readiness Program.

Indigenous learning

Seaforth Childcare rests on the land of the traditional home of the Guringai people, and our Vision for Reconciliation at Seaforth Childcare is something we’re passionate about. We’re dedicated to helping the children in our care develop an awareness and appreciation of Aboriginal history and culture, via arts and crafts, storytelling and songs. We have a section of the Centre reserved for Indigenous arts and crafts our children have created, which is updated regularly.

Acknowledgment of Country

We gather in this special place to continue our learning journey together. At Seaforth Childcare, we acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the Land upon which we meet. We pay our respects to Elders of the past, present and acknowledge their connection to Country.

Inclusion and diversity

At Seaforth Childcare, we foster a sense of inclusion at all times. Therefore, we welcome the diversity of the many cultures found within our community and believe these strengthen and enrich our lives and the lives of the children we care for.
