Meet Sophie | Director and Nominated Supervisor
Why did you choose to work in early childhood education and care?
From a young age I have always loved children. I surrounded myself with them whenever I could and loved to plan activities for them.
I chose this career because I am passionate about educating young children and supporting families.
Being able to work with children and watch them grow is the most amazing thing in the world. Children always choose to see the best in a situation and having the opportunity to help them realize their potential every day is an incredibly rewarding experience.
When did you start working in early childhood education and care?
I have a Bachelor of Education in Early Childhood. I have worked in the industry for over 20 years, 14 of those years have been at Seaforth Childcare. I absolutely love my job! What are you passionate about?
I am passionate about outdoor environments for children. Children need access to gardens to see things grow, open spaces to run, bikes to ride and balance, connection with nature and opportunities to engage in outdoor learning that stimulate the senses, invite exploration and discovery and challenge children as active learners. I am proud to say we have developed an amazing outdoor space at Seaforth Child Care.
What is your vision for early childhood education?
My vision is to create a home away from home for children, some peace in the busyness of their day, for them to
experience engaging, meaningful play that promotes their desire for learning and sparks their curiosity. For children to freely explore an environment that supports the development of positive relationships and nurtures each individual’s sense of belonging.
Tell us about your family and your favourite early childhood memory?
I am a single mum living on the Northern Beaches with my daughter Lily who is 14. I have strong relationships with my family and spend a great deal of time with my brother, niece and nephew. Which I love!
My favourite early childhood memory would have to be playing outdoors, we had a huge tree in our backyard which we pretended was the Magic Faraway Tree – all the children in the neighbourhood would spend hours in the tree while we dreamed of all the amazing lands we could visit at the top of the tree. As soon as my daughter was old enough I introduced her to the Magic Faraway series.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I am a mum of a netball fanatic. I spend most of my spare time on the sideline cheering, or driving to various games, trials and competitions all around Sydney. When I do get to spend time on my own I enjoy reading and spending time with my gorgeous parents and brother’s family, enjoying a BBQ or a day out at the beach and movies!
What is your favourite kid’s movie?
I loooove Paddington!
